ATTILA – THE PIONEER OF UKRAINIAN BREEDING03.07.2015

Nowadays breeding material of sunflower in Ukraine presents mainly by foreign companies. However, in recent years, become increasingly popular production of domestic breeding, which is represents mainly by All-Ukrainian Scientific Institute of Breeding (VNIS).
The main area of Institute of Breeding (VNIS) is creating hybrids that respond the following basic criteria:

  • increased productivity;
  • increased oil content;
  • high adaptability and stability;
  • resistance to diseases and pests;
  • resistance to lodging and drought.

The range of varieties and hybrids allows choosing the seeds for any region of Ukraine. Getting high-quality seed is been provided by an implemented hybridization system.

Most of VNIS hybrids are unpretentious to the production conditions. The traditional technologies, recommended for corresponding regions, are suitable for them. But each sunflower hybrid has his owns features, that allow to the farmer choose the most optimal range for the maximum profit.

Adaptive capacity, high yield and reasonable price of seeds make the sunflower hybrid of Ukrainske sonechko breeding by VNIS a powerful competitor in the seed market of Ukraine.

Hybrid Atilla (95-100 days) with potential yield – 52 cwt/ha, is characterized by high adaptability and highly resistant to diseases and stress conditions and were designed for growing on different types of soil. High adaptability – it is the ability of hybrid to produce high yield in different areas and under different conditions. Hybrid Atilla was included to the State Register of varieties of Ukraine only in 2014, but over the years of testing it showed high productivity throughout Ukraine. Especially, should be noted, the high drought tolerance and hybrid resistance to broomrape races ABCDEF, which is one of the most important criteria for growing Attila in the southern and eastern regions of Ukraine. Thus, this hybrid have been given in different regions such yield: in the Donetsk region (FG ‘Kolos’ Artemivsk district) on an area of 80 ha – 21 cwt/ha; Luhansk region (PDP ‘Ahro-Skhid’ Popasnianskyi district) on the area of 90 ha – 19 cwt/ha; Mykolaiv region (PDP ‘Kolos’ Novobuzkyi district) on an area of 120 ha – 24 cwt/ha; Vinnytsia region(FG ‘Yuzvak V.V.’ Kryzhopilskyi district) on the area of 50 ha – 38 cwt/ha, in the Poltava region (FG ‘Suvorov M.O.’) on an area of 100 ha – 35 cwt/ha, Cherkassy region (LPG ‘Julia’ Drabivskyi district) in the area of 300 ha – 33 cwt/ha, in Khmelnytsky region (FG ‘Zamihivske 06’ Novoushitskiy district) on an area of 50 ha – 31 cwt/ha in Sumy region (PDP ‘Komyshanske’ Okhtyrskyi district) on an area of 200 ha – 32 cwt/ha.

Due to the current trend of growing sunflowers All-Ukrainian Scientific Institute of Breeding (VNIS) leads a constant, continuous breeding work to create high-yielding and adaptive sunflower hybrids. Nowadays Institute of Breeding VNIS has achievements in creating new hybrids and a sufficient number of hybrids such as: Ukrainske sonechko (90-95 days) – ultra precocious drought-resistant hybrid, designed for growing on different types of soil, recommended for crop planting, crop yield potential is – 42 cwt/ha; Ukrainskyi F1 (105-108 days) has a rapid development in the early stages of growth, extremely resistant to disease, pests and stress conditions, yield potential – 52 cwt/ha; Soniachnyi nastrii’(98-103 days) – resistant to herbicides containing tribenuron-methyl (SU), has high drought resistance, yield potential – 51 cwt/ha; Zahrava (100-108 days) has high competitive ability of weeds in the early stages of growth, good leafy, covering the ground in the budding phase, yield potential – 52 cwt/ha; Auris (105-108 days) resistant to herbicides containing tribenuron-methyl (SU), characterized by drought-resistant and high ductility to growing conditions, yield potential – 52 cwt/ha; Armahedon (100 days) resistant to herbicides of imidazole’s group (IMI), characterized by high yield, disease resistance and large size of seed, yield potential – 53 cwt/ha; Matador (107-115 days) – resistant to herbicides containing tribenuron-methyl (SU), high-yielding hybrid with increased resistance to diseases and pests, yield potential – 49 cwt/ha; Drakon 9103-107 days) resistant to herbicides containing tribenuron-methyl (SU), high-yielding hybrid with increased resistance to diseases and stress conditions, yield potential – 47 cwt/ha. The Institute aims to create hybrids that could worthily compete with foreign producers.

Importantly! All seeds sunflower hybrids, created by breedingin Institute, packed in branded bags with numbered labels provided with additional protection system - a hologram of the logo VNIS. Any other packaging indicates adulteration of seeds.
